Can you obtain a loan as an AVS or AI pension recipient?

Do you receive an AVS or AI pension? Access to credit is possible under certain conditions in Switzerland. Income, age, debt enforcement proceedings and creditworthiness: the criteria to know before submitting an application.

Loans for AVS or AI pension recipients in Switzerland: is it possible?

Yes. An AVS (Old Age and Survivors' Insurance) or AI (Disability Insurance) pension recipient can submit a consumer credit application.

However, the granting of a personal loan remains subject to strict conditions, designed to protect the borrower against over-indebtedness and to ensure responsible assessment of the application.

Since every situation is unique, access to credit for a pension recipient depends mainly on income level, overall financial situation and compliance with certain banking criteria.

Unlike a salaried employee, the income is fixed and not subject to change. Financial institutions therefore assess repayment capacity with particular care. The amount of the pension, monthly expenses and personal circumstances are all decisive factors.

The application itself remains simple, quick and free of charge. It is the acceptance criteria that require in-depth analysis.

What conditions are generally required?

For an application to be favourably assessed, certain minimum conditions are frequently applied:

  • monthly pension income of at least CHF 3,000
  • no receipt of supplementary benefits or daily allowances
  • not exceeding 68 years of age
  • no ongoing debt enforcement proceedings or certificates of loss
  • not under guardianship or curatorship

These criteria may vary slightly depending on the banking partner, but they represent a common basis for assessment.

Does age affect the loan term?

Yes, significantly.

Most banks require that the loan be fully repaid before the age of 65.

For pension recipients, contractual terms rarely exceed 36 months, and the loan must be fully repaid before the age of 70.

The term directly affects the monthly repayment amount: the shorter the term, the higher the instalments.

What documents are required?

Assessing a pension recipient's application requires specific supporting documents in order to evaluate the stability of income and expenses.

The documents generally requested are:

  • a copy of the Swiss identity document or residence permit
  • the last three bank statements showing pension payments
  • official AVS or AI pension certificates

Lending institutions may request additional documents depending on the situation.

Responsible assessment before any decision

Granting a loan to a pension recipient requires a prudent approach. The goal is not only to obtain approval, but to ensure that the solution remains compatible with the monthly budget and does not create financial imbalance.

At Milenia, we assess each situation with rigour and transparency. We present applications to our financial partners taking into account the specific criteria applicable to AVS or AI pension recipients.

We also carry out a preliminary creditworthiness check to avoid any unnecessary adverse entries with the ZEK.

The assessment is free of charge and non-binding, with a prompt response.
