Health insurance, the 2nd leading cause of debt in Switzerland.

According to several recent statistics, people in financial difficulty in Switzerland first forego paying their taxes and then their health insurance.

According to studies conducted in 2015, nearly 60% of indebted households were indebted largely because of health insurance.

Another striking figure emerges from these studies: among indebted households, 72% of people with a job have debts related to health insurance. This is due to the fact that the slightest change in their financial situation can turn everything upside down. Losing their job, for example, can cause them to lose up to 30% of their income if they become unemployed. For example, a person earning CHF 3,500 a month and without children can see his or her salary rise to around CHF 2,500 unemployed.

Suffice to say that with such a difference in a budget, it can be extremely difficult to keep up, especially when there is usually a car on lease, a phone subscription, internet, rent, health insurance, taxes etc...

In addition, health insurers are very strict about late payments, unlike other creditors who are more flexible when you are in arrears. It is therefore essential to make health insurance one of your reimbursement priorities when you are in financial difficulty.

Indebted against their will:

When they reach the age of majority, many young people find themselves having to pay large sums of money because of health insurance premiums that were not paid by their parents when they were minors.

How can such a situation be explained?

Although parents are responsible for paying their children's health insurance premiums, unfortunately it is the children who are legally responsible for paying their health insurance premiums. Also, when the children reach the age of majority, they are then considered responsible for health insurance premiums not paid when they were minors. And in many cases, they quickly find themselves stuck because they do not yet have the means to meet the amount of arrears that health insurance requires.

There is therefore a risk that they will find themselves registered with the debt collection office and have a negative solvency when they return to work.
